When Ahmad Jafari and his family arrived in the United States in 2021, they faced an overwhelming reality—language barriers, cultural differences, and the uncertainty of starting over in an unfamiliar country. Coming from a stable life in Afghanistan, the sudden upheaval caused by the Taliban takeover forced them to flee with no time for preparation. However, through the support of International Institute of Los Angeles (IILA) and our Preferred Communities Program, the Jafari’s found a path forward. 

Upon arrival, Mr. Jafari was connected with an IILA case manager who provided guidance and essential resources to help his family navigate their new environment. Reflecting on his early experiences, he shared, “I imagined difficult living conditions due to my language barriers and unfamiliarity with the culture. But the warm welcome and support from the resettlement agency reassured me that we would be able to integrate into the community.” 

Recognizing the profound impact of these services, Mr. Jafari described IILA’s work as “like giving an eye to a blind person and an ear to a deaf person.” Without knowledge of the English language, he felt lost, but IILA helped him communicate, understand vital information, and begin rebuilding his life. 

With stable employment and community ties in Afghanistan, having to uproot themselves and flee so quickly left Mr. Jafari and his family without jobs, housing, or resources. Adjusting to life in the U.S. required patience, persistence, and structured support. One major challenge he encountered was the unexpected suspension of his public benefits. For an entire month, he attempted to resolve the issue with the Department of Social Services without success. However, once IILA intervened, our team acted swiftly, collecting necessary documents, securing appointments, and advocating on his behalf. “The IILA staff acted professionally and efficiently. Within just three days, my public benefits were reinstated,” he said. 

Beyond immediate assistance, IILA also connected Mr. Jafari to critical community resources. Understanding the importance of collaborative support, IILA facilitated partnerships to help with necessities such as clothing, food, and household essentials. “The agency helped me find community resources and linked me to the support I needed. As a result, I am moving toward self-sufficiency, and I appreciate their work,” he shared. 

Through strategic coordination and a client-focused approach, IILA has empowered Mr. Jafari and his family to regain stability and independence. His story is a testament to the life-changing impact of refugee resettlement programs and the crucial role that community support plays in helping families rebuild their lives. 

Today, he and his family have stable housing, and Mr. Jafari is working full-time. The family’s eldest son recently graduated from high school, has applied to colleges, obtained his driving permit, and is preparing for his behind-the-wheel driving test. Ahmad Jafari stands as an example of resilience and determination, demonstrating that with the right support, every refugee has the potential to thrive.
