Refugees, asylees, and/or other individuals with humanitarian visas, including Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs), face unique challenges in navigating the college application and admissions process. One significant challenge is limited access to in-state tuition and state financial aid at all of their state’s public colleges and universities, particularly in the time before refugees and other individuals qualify for and obtain lawful permanent resident (LPR) status. A growing number of states, including California have implemented statewide policies expanding access to in-state tuition and state financial aid to individuals with refugee and other humanitarian statuses.
