At International Institute of Los Angeles (IILA), our mission is brought to life every day through the dedication and compassion of our staff. Liseth Cornejo, Utility Assistance Outreach Worker, embodies this mission through her unwavering commitment to serving vulnerable communities with empathy, professionalism, and heart. 

As the daughter of a migrant parent and a proud first-generation professional, Liseth's passion for service is deeply rooted in her personal journey. "Helping others has always been at the forefront of my aspirations and dreams," she shares. "Being part of IILA has turned that dream into a reality." 

Since joining the IILA staff in July 2023, Liseth has played an integral role in delivering our utilities assistance programs (TEAM, CHANGES, and an LA DWP water program), as well as the LA Metro LIFE program for free to low-cost transportation. These initiatives provide critical relief to households facing disconnection of essential services and the need for subsidized transportation. Liseth works directly with clients to help them enroll in key support programs, maintain their services, catch up on bills, and receive vital utility education. Her role also includes conducting targeted outreach to connect individuals and families with the resources they need to regain stability and thrive.  

Liseth and IILA’s Supportive Services Team make a significant difference in the community for those struggling with their bills—having assisted with electric, gas, phone, and internet bill questions and debt resolution in multiple languages for nearly 500 clients and water bill education and assistance for over 170 clients in 2024. “A typical day for me is both challenging and rewarding,” Liseth says. “I spend time helping clients sign up for services, providing case management support, and engaging in outreach to assist those most in need.”

Liseth's impact goes beyond the services she provides—it's felt in the lives she helps change. Erika Lopez, IILA's Director of Supportive Services and Liseth's supervisor, explains how, "After Liseth joined our team, I quickly started to receive dozens of clients looking specifically for Liseth's assistance. When I asked clients why they ask for her, I kept hearing the same answer–'She helped my friend/family to resolve the issues other organizations couldn't. She's also so kind and empathetic. She's the type of person you can really rely on.'" 

When unexpected needs in the community have arisen, Liseth has not hesitated to jump in and use her role on the team to help. "In January, when the wildfires raged in Los Angeles," Erika continues, "Liseth was one of the first staff members to participate in the outreach events focusing on those most vulnerable. She stayed day and night to provide relief to those in need." 

For Liseth, one of her most memorable experiences with IILA so far involved supporting a client whose power had been disconnected for two nights. After being turned away by other agencies, the client found Liseth. "Within three hours, I helped reconnect her services and enrolled her in a manageable payment plan. Today, she is debt-free and doing well," Liseth proudly recalls. "Moments like these are why our work matters." 

Her dedication also extends to collaborative efforts within IILA, including a recent food card distribution initiative. "It was incredible to see our team come together. Everyone brought their strengths, and we made a real impact for the families we served. It's a testament to the teamwork and commitment that define IILA."

Liseth credits much of her professional growth to the supportive environment at IILA. "From the very beginning, I've felt guided and empowered," she says. "Working here has set me on a clear career path that aligns with my values. I've experienced such personal transformation, and I know others can, too." 

Outside of work, Liseth prioritizes self-care and family time. Whether she's enjoying a relaxing spa day or exploring the outdoors with her kids, she understands the importance of recharging to serve others with energy and compassion. 

When asked what makes IILA unique, Liseth doesn't hesitate. "Our organization stands out because of our consistent focus on meeting the needs of both our clients and our staff. There's a genuine care here that creates a strong sense of purpose and connection."
