Legislative Alert

The Trump administration and elected leaders in Washington are actively working to tear families apart, decimate our refugee program, and end policies that allow people seeking safety to find refuge in the United States. Attacking refugees and immigrants doesn’t solve problems, instead, it undermines community by reinforcing divisions. The truth is, newcomers — just like countless immigrants and refugees before them — are vital to our communities. The entrepreneurs, teachers, nurses, artists, and fellow worshippers make our neighborhoods vibrant and diverse.

Our representatives at all levels need to hear from us! Let’s let them know we believe in welcoming, we reject fear, and we want solutions that support us all.

Background

On April 7, 2025, 23 US nonprofit organizations published a report urging the United Nations to address the rapidly deteriorating human rights situation of non-citizens in the United States.

The organizations that submitted the report include Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, Public Counsel, Amnesty International, International Refugee Assistance Project, Refugee Council USA, Refugees International, and Physicians for Human Rights. The report was submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, which is scheduled to formally review US policies and practices in November.

The report cites specific examples of abuse and violations by the US government, including:

  • The detention and mistreatment of migrant children;
  • The indefinite suspension of the US refugee system and blocking access to lawful asylum at the US-MX border;
  • President Trump’s recent invocation of the Alien Enemies Act to unilaterally detain and disappear immigrants;
  • ICE’s deceptive and invasive methods of arrest; and
  • The escalating retaliation against non-citizens who engage in political speech.

Each day brings to light more disturbing stories of non-citizens who are arrested and detained without apparent cause, often at gunpoint by masked law enforcement. Recently, multiple media outlets, including NBC, NPR, and the New York Times, reported on the arrest and detention of a mother and her three children, including a third grader, in Sackets Harbor, NY. The family was arrested in the middle of the night at gunpoint, handcuffed and taken to a detention center in Texas, and only released after almost two weeks because of strong opposition from the community, the Sackets Harbor school district, advocacy groups, and elected officials, including the NY governor, Kathy Hochul.

Respecting the dignity and rights of non-citizens is essential to preserving not only our democracy, but also our decency and humanity as a nation, which, after all, is a nation of immigrants.

During a time when there is much in the news to overwhelm us, we cannot lose sight of what is happening to those who are both the most vulnerable and, tragically, now the most vilified in our country. Your voice has never been more important, and I urge you to contact your elected officials in support of the rights of all people, regardless of immigration status, to due process and humane treatment.
