An IILA Case Manager reflects on the transformation of a young IILA client:

One of the most rewarding moments in my work has been seeing a young client smile again and actively engage in school and the community.

“Sara”, a 12-year-old girl, arrived in the United States in 2021 with her 22-year-old brother, while the rest of her family — including her parents and siblings — remained in their home country. Sara and her brother were resettled through the IILA team and lived together in a small one-bedroom apartment.

Being separated from her family, lacking English language skills, having limited social connections, and facing many adjustment challenges led Sara to experience serious mental health difficulties, including severe depression.

Sara was enrolled in an IILA Program, where a case manager developed a comprehensive care plan focused on addressing her mental health needs, daily life challenges, and community integration. The case manager referred Sara to mental health therapy, where she attended counseling sessions aimed at reducing her depression and strengthening her emotional well-being.

At the same time, the case manager helped relocate Sara and her brother to a larger home where other families shared the same language and cultural background, including children close to her age. This environment helped Sara communicate more comfortably and reduced her sense of isolation.

To further support the family, the case manager connected them with local community resources that provided cash assistance, household items such as beds and cooking supplies, and clothing. With these supports in place, Sara was able to enroll in school and gradually gained confidence.

One of the proudest moments of my career happened when I visited Sara’s school. I saw her smiling, talking with friends, and showing a completely positive change in her attitude and behavior. She greeted me warmly and said, “See, I am myself again now. It was your support and the support of the IILA team that helped me find myself. Please do not delay in helping people in need — today is better than tomorrow.”

Sara asked me to share her gratitude with the IILA team for their meaningful and life-changing support.
